Ever wonder why we don’t make chewable supplements?
There are many easy to deliver natural health products for pets in treat form on the market such as joint treats. Your pet gobbles them up and it makes the medicine go down easily! What’s not to love?
Well, actually there is a lot not to love. The problem is, these treats might not actually be delivering the benefits they claim to offer.
When we looked at some of the leading chewable supplements we were shocked at what we found. When it comes to the dose of each medicinal ingredient in these products, the amounts are so low that it would be nearly impossible to get any benefit from them.
So we decided to go a little deeper and compare one of the leading joint support chewable to our Dr. Maggie Joint Formula. Both contain similar ingredients and promised similar benefits.
Medicinal Ingredient Comparison
The amount of glucosamine and chondroitin in this product (label below in green) is so small it's hard to even tell how many mg would be in each dose! We actually made a point to send this label to our R&D department to make sure we were reading this correctly because it just didn't seem right.
This treat contains only 750 mg/kg of glucosamine and 1000 mg/kg of chondroitin. Yup, you read that right, per kg. The bag itself doesn't even weigh one kilogram. At 881 g for the bag, the whole entire bag only contains only 562.5 mg of glucosamine and only 881 mg of chondroitin!
That means that each treat is going to give you only 15 mg of glucosamine and 24 mg of chondroitin.
Dr. Maggie Joint Formula
Dr. Maggie Joint Formula contains 500 mg of glucosamine, 360 mg of chondroitin, 257 mg of MSM and 44 mg of vitamin C per 5 ml dose. That means you’re getting 33 times more glucosamine, 15 times more chondroitin, as well as the additional MSM and vitamin C per dose.

In other words, you’d have to give your pet the entire bag of treats to get even close to the same benefits!
Non-medicinal ingredients & Quality
And that's not all. We looked at the other ingredients in these treats and what we found was downright scary! They were made of mostly corn flour, soy flour, propylene glycol, wheat bran, maltodextrin, corn oil, and artificial flavor.
These ingredients are toxic to dogs and should be avoided in dog food and treats. Such cheap ingredients are hard to digest and contribute to inflammation, among other issues - which is the opposite of what you want the joint supplement to do!
Compare that to our ingredients which include purified water and natural flavor from plants! These ingredients are designed with your pets' health and taste buds in mind.
